Simple, but very versatile A slim book, just twelve pages long, with one short sentence per page. Ned the Hedgehog is looking for a place to hibernate, and encounters rabbits, a fox, owls and bats before discovering a perfect pile of leaves. The illustrations are suitably dark and mysterious (but not scary) and the language is delightfully repetitive, so even very young children can join in and early readers can follow the story for themselves. This makes the book suitable, I would suggest, for children from about 2…

Short and sweet We’re huge fans of Tim Hopgood’s books, but have been a little disappointed by this rather short offering. Ned is a very likeable hedgehog on a journey to find somewhere to hibernate, but I feel even my 2 year old wanted the story to expand further. I think it may come in to its own when he’s a bit older and can add his own imagination and interpretation to the story though, hence the overall positive 4 star review.

Super tale of Ned the hedgehog! Ideal autumn/winter themed book for my EYFS group. Very simple and short story line with repeating phrases and lots of lovely sensory opportunities to make it motivating and exciting.
