‘The best book I read last year was Shoe Dog, by Nike’s Phil Knight. Phil is a very wise, intelligent and competitive fellow who is also a gifted storyteller’ Warren Buffett

In 1962, fresh out of business school, Phil Knight borrowed $50 from his father and created a company with a simple mission: import high-quality, low-cost athletic shoes from Japan. Selling the shoes from the boot of his Plymouth, Knight grossed $8000 in his first year. Today, Nike’s annual sales top $30 billion. In an age of start-ups, Nike is the ne plus ultra of all start-ups, and the swoosh has become a revolutionary, globe-spanning icon, one of the most ubiquitous and recognisable symbols in the world today.

But Knight, the man behind the swoosh, has always remained a mystery. Now, for the first time, he tells his story. Candid, humble, wry and gutsy, he begins with his crossroads moment when at 24 he decided to start his own business. He details the many risks and daunting setbacks that stood between him and his dream – along with his early triumphs. Above all, he recalls how his first band of partners and employees soon became a tight-knit band of brothers. Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a shared mission, and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they built a brand that changed everything.

A memoir rich with insight, humour and hard-won wisdom, this book is also studded with lessons – about building something from scratch, overcoming adversity, and ultimately leaving your mark on the world.

Inspiring and captivating – Excellent biography Just finished listening to the audiobook. I also have the e-book which I red in parts. The book is very well written and read almost like a novel it’s not just about business but also a fascinating story from the very beginning. This type of biography which is written by the founder himself is my favourite because you get to know the person as opposed to biographies written by somebody else who has researched the business person. As somebody who has recently started his business,…

“You are remembered for the rules you break” – sums up this book SHOE DOG provides an unvarnished story of how Phil Knight started Nike and turned it into a £30 billion global company.Shoe Dog is a person whose life is about shoes. Only one question bothers them all the time: How to make better shoes? After reading this book, the next day when I went to my gym, I noticed that majority were wearing a Nike. But, I didn’t just see the shoes; I could see the sweat and blood that its founders had put into making Nike a universal brand…

Shoe Dog I was a little dubious when I saw so many 5 star reviews for this book here, but after reading this I have to say I wholeheartedly agree. This memoir by Phil Knight explores the travel adventures he went on after finishing college and the world view it gave him. It then looks at how he set up the business that eventually became Nike and how he battled adversity and his competitors to become one of the most respected global sports brands. Each chapter follows a year in the life of the founder…
